Artist Profile: Ajmal Millar

Ajmal “Mas Man” Millar (b. 1986, Brooklyn, NY) is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Chicago, IL, whose work includes mixed media collage, painting, metal, performance and photography. Much of Millar’s work is inspired by Mas, referring to masquerade in Caribbean carnival celebrations in which participants wear ornate, colorful costumes. Millar’s practice examines the intersections of sexual, gender and racial identities, experiences of immigration and Caribbean cultural heritage. He received a BA in English from Morehouse College and completed an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2021.
